A Chapel Hill firefighter was treated for non-life threatening injuries after crews were called to a structure fire during Wednesday’s winter storm.

Crews responded to the 500 block of North Columbia Street just before noon on Wednesday. The fire reportedly started in a vacant unit of a public housing community. Two adjacent units were also damaged by smoke and water.

There were no civilian injuries reported in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews from Chapel Hill and Carrboro Fire Departments, along with Chapel Hill Police and Orange County EMS units responded to the call.

Chapel Hill officials also reported several accidents across the community as roads deteriorated quickly Wednesday morning.

Crews had been working since Monday to prepare roadways ahead of the inclement weather, but temperatures were a couple of degrees warmer than anticipated to start the day. That caused the first precipitation to fall as rain, which washed away some of the brine that had been spread in the lead up to the storm.
