CHAPEL HILL- Hundreds of Chapel Hillians were left in the dark Friday afternoon and evening on and around Gimghoul Rd. after police say a tree fell near the south side of Fordham Blvd.

“At around 3:30 p.m., I believe a tree fell down near the Manning Drive area on the south side of Fordham Blvd, not the campus side,” says Lt. Jabe Hunter of the Chapel Hill PD. “That took down some power lines and caused an outage on that side of the city.”

Hunter says he’s unsure of how many residents were without power at the peak of the incident, but according to Duke Energy, about 420 customers were in the dark around 10:30 p.m.

Service was restored shortly before 11:30 p.m.
