Early voting got underway in North Carolina last week – and at least in Orange County, it’s looking like turnout will smash previous record highs.

On Friday, 4,821 Orange County residents cast ballots at five early voting sites. That brings the total number of votes cast to more than 10,000 in Orange County, in just the first two days of early voting.

According to the Orange County Board of Elections, 10,211 residents had voted through Friday. To put that into perspective: in 2012, 7,239 residents voted in the first two days of early voting – and in 2008, the tally was 5,905.

Turnout has also been high in other Triangle-area counties. In Durham County, 15,490 voters turned out on Thursday and Friday – and through Saturday, 32,308 voters have cast ballots in Wake County. (Saturday counts aren’t yet available for Durham or Orange Counties.)

Early voting continues through Saturday, November 5.
