Thirty-eight people cast ballots in Orange County on Thursday, the first day of early voting.

That’s according to the Orange County Board of Elections. Only one early voting site is open this week, at the Board of Elections office in Hillsborough. Three more sites will open on Monday the 23rd – at Chapel of the Cross, the Seymour Center, and Carrboro Town Hall.

Does that number offer any indication as to how high voter turnout will be this year? It’s hard to say. 2009 was the last odd-year election where only one location was open on the first early-voting day, and only 10 people voted then – but early voting was still a fairly new phenomenon at the time, and early-voting turnout in general has gone up since.

For those of you hoping for a high turnout at the polls, the operative number is 4243. That’s the number of people who voted early in Orange County in 2011 – still the record for an odd-year local election.
