CHAPEL HILL – Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board chair, Shell Brownstein, says closing the achievement gap will continue to be her top priority if re-elected to the board.

“What that means is, we have to have, we absolutely have to have a year’s worth of growth for all of our students, but we have to have accelerated growth for those who are behind,” Brownstein says. “That catch-up growth is critical.”

Four candidates are contending for three seats on the school board. Brownstein says as the candidate with the most experience, she is the best fit for one of those seats.

“I have been on the board for nearly four years,” Brownstein says. “I’ve served as vice chair, and now I’m chair. I’ve been on a breath of committees; it’s one of the things that we are really committed to as a board so you have a full spectrum of experience that you can bring to the table.”

Between now and Election Day, we’ll be previewing each of the candidates one-on-one.
