Local Officials Detail Changes Coming To University Square

CHAPEL HILL- Now that big changes are set for University Square, local officials are outlining some of the specific moves that are set to take place—as well as what parts of the reshuffling have already started.

“Everything at University Square is relocating, and thankfully, some of it is finding space in our downtown,” said Chapel Hill Friends of the Downtown President Pat Evans during the Friends’ meeting on Thursday. “Franklin Street Yoga has moved to the courtyard, and the eye care center will be moving across the street to 140.”

In February, Chapel Hill Town Council unanimously approved a major plan to redevelop 123 West Franklin Street, also known as University Square. The new version of University Square is slated be a mixed-use development with more than 200,000 square feet of office space,75,000 square feet of retail space, and 300 one and two-bedroom apartments. The entire undertaking, which is being designed to Cousins Properties of Atlanta, is estimated to cost between $80 million and $100 million.

Evans says most of the other businesses at University Square will be relocating to University Mall.

“That includes Kidzu, which is going to the site where our library was housed temporarily,” she says. “That will be a real plus for University Mall, which we also want to thrive.”
