The UNC football player who was accused of raping another student has been cleared of any wrongdoing under university policy.

The defense attorney for Allen Artis, Kerry Sutton, said the university’s Title IX Compliance Coordinator had notified the reserve linebacker that Artis was cleared after a “thorough investigation.”

UNC student Delaney Robinson accused Artis of raping her on Valentine’s Day 2016. Robinson took out misdemeanor warrants in September of last year after saying she was frustrated with the lack of action from the university and criminal justice system.

Robinson’s attorney Denise Branch also issued a statement about the decision from the university on Thursday.

“Ms. Robinson is shocked and dismayed by the failure of UNC Title IX office to hold Mr. Artis accountable for his actions. She has appealed this initial finding which is subject to further administrative review. Robinson continues to cooperate with the ongoing efforts in the criminal investigation by Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall and remains confident that justice will be served.”

Artis is still facing the misdemeanor charges of sexual battery and assault. Sutton said Artis has maintained his innocence in the criminal proceedings.

Sutton says there is no firm date for the next step in the criminal case.

Artis was suspended indefinitely from the UNC football team when the charges were sworn out, which is standard procedure for any player facing misdemeanor charges.
