Suspect On-The-Run Last Seen In Durham

CHAPEL HILL –The Orange County Sheriff’s office was involved in a foot chase Tuesday that began in Chapel Hill. The suspect on-the-run is Jeffry Dawes—and he was last seen in Durham.

The chase began near Mount Sinai Road and Cascade Drive sometime around 4 p.m Tuesday.

“They found that the suspect was spotted over in the western part of Durham County and they are looking for him over there now,” said Orange County Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass.

The OC Sheriff’s Office worked with the NC Department of Public Safety, the State Bureau of Investigation and the ALE in the pursuit.

The OC Sheriff’s Office in no longer searching for Dawes since he was last scene in Durham–which is  out of their jurisdiction. The ALE Task Force and the Highway Patrol have taken over.

Pendergrass said Dawes is a five-foot-five, 20-year-old black male—he was wearing a white shirt. Local law enforcement approached a house on  Cascade Drive; Dawes then fled the scene and the chase began. He was not armed.

“The individual has outstanding warrants on him and they tried to pick him for those—they are all drug-related warrants,” Pendergrass said.

The Sheriff’s Office search dog unit worked the case until around 6:30 p.m.

WCHL first received reports of the chase via a phone alert issued by the Sheriff’s Department.

Why did the Sheriff’s Department issue a phone alert? I received this phone alert and could not tell who it came from or whether it was genuine.
