The suspect in the murder of a 71-year-old Anglican priest from Durham made his first court appearance in Hillsborough on Monday afternoon, and the judge sent him back to Orange County Jail without bail in less than a minute.

The probable cause hearing for 36-year-old Matthew John Reed on a charge of first-degree murder was scheduled for August 25.

Reed, whose last know address is in Raleigh, led investigators to the body of missing Anglican priest Kent Hinkson in an area of Eno State Park in Orange County, at around midnight Sunday.

“I will just say that Mr. Reed did make contact with the authorities,” Orange and Chatham District Attorney Jim Woodall told WCHL Monday, “and it was through that contact that the authorities were able to locate the body.”

Hinkson, who lived in the Woodcroft area of South Durham, was reported missing by his wife the previous Monday. He had reportedly gone out to run shopping and banking errands that afternoon, and never returned home.

His car was found two days later at a Durham apartment complex, about five miles from his residence.

Very little is known about Reed. His name was not found in a search of records of the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

“I’m not really sure where Mr. Reed is from,” said Woodall. “I know he’s moved around quite a bit the last few years. I think he may have given a Raleigh address, but I believe he’s been spending a lot of time in Durham.”

Woodall said it’s too early to talk about a possible motive for the crime.
