A suspect has been arrested in connection with a reported shooting near I-85 in late November.

Authorities say 21-year-old Matthew Murty was arrested by members of the US Marshals Joint Fugitive Task Force just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Murty allegedly fired multiple shots at three victims standing outside of their disabled vehicle off of I-85 near Mile Marker 158 at approximately 3 a.m. on November 30.

The victims had pulled off of the interstate while traveling southbound due to mechanical issues, according to law enforcement, when Murty – who was also allegedly traveling in the southbound lanes – saw the victims and fired “multiple rounds.” One victim was struck in the leg and the vehicle was hit three times.

Authorities say the alleged shooting escalated from an altercation between Murty and the victims in Durham.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Marshals on Monday, December 4, to apprehend Murty, according to a release. Surveillance was then conducted in the area of Norwood Court in Mebane when Murty was located and taken into custody on December 6.

The injured shooting victim was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Murty is now being held in the Orange County Jail under a $300,000 secured bond, records show. Murty has been charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
