A man suspected of an armed robbery in Orange County has died after he suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound when leading police on a chase earlier this week.

The incident began when deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call just after 10 o’clock on Monday morning of a reported armed robbery on Buckhorn Road. Authorities say the victim was shot “numerous times” but was able to identify the suspect to deputies.

Law enforcement then issued a Be-On-The-Lookout message for a green Jeep Cherokee, which was later seen by an officer with the Mebane Police Department. The suspect fled when authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, according to police, leading law enforcement from Mebane PD and the State Highway Patrol on a chase into Alamance County.

The vehicle eventually wrecked after spike strips were deployed on two separate occasions.

Authorities say the suspect in the vehicle – 57-year-old Stephen Tracy Scott – was found with “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” when law enforcement approached the vehicle.

Scott was transported to Duke University Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. An update from Mebane Police on Thursday said the department had been notified Scott died on Wednesday evening at the hospital as a result of the gunshot wound.

Scott had been wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and armed robbery in association with the initial call on Buckhorn Road Monday morning.

Authorities say the victim in the initial incident was taken to Duke Hospital with serious injuries. There has been no update regarding his condition as of Thursday afternoon.
