Chapel Hill’s license plate agency office has been closed down by the state Division of Motor Vehicles for “possible violations of state laws.”

That was the word from the DMV on Friday. In a statement, the division says the closure was the result of a still-ongoing investigation by the License and Theft Bureau – an investigation that began with an anonymous tip.

The Chapel Hill license plate agency is located at 1704-B East Franklin Street, in Gateway Commons. It’s been in operation there since 2013 – after the closure of an earlier license plate agency that operated in University Place. That office closed as the result of an embezzlement investigation.

Because the investigation is still ongoing, the DMV is not releasing additional details yet. If you need to go to a license plate agency, there are two in Durham, both open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm: one in Northgate Mall and another at 5410 Highway 55.
