Sgt. Douglas Hemingway responded to an attempted carjacking at the Quick Mart gas station on the corner of Churton and Orange Grove Street just before 10:30 Friday morning.

Hemingway followed the driver to the Department of Social Services parking lot on Mayo Street, where the driver hit two parked cars before fleeing on foot.

Following a short chase, the driver attempted to steal the police car. Hemingway pulled the suspect out of the car window and struggled with him until more officers arrived and the suspect was arrested.

Hemingway was treated and released from UNC Hospitals for injuries received during the struggle.

The suspect is identified as Davon Rucker of Alabama. He was arrested on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle and assaulting a law enforcement officer.

He’s also a suspect in an Atlanta carjacking that left a 79-year old woman seriously injured. The car Rucker was driving in Hillsborough belongs to the Atlanta victim. Rucker is being held in the Orange County Jail on a $50,000 secured bond.

Police say additional charges may be pending.
