After more than three months of investigation, an arrest has been made in a child abduction and sexual assault case.

Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson recounted at a press conference the events from mid-October when an 11-year-old girl was abducted while waiting for a school bus.

Johnson said DNA evidence led to the arrest of 39-year-old Greg Daniel Overman of Haw River.

Johnson said that Overman had an “extensive criminal record” including six felonies and “many” misdemeanors.

Overman “in my opionion, should not even have been out of the street,” said Johnson.

Overman has been charged with felony statutory rape of a child and felony statutory sex offense with a child by an adult, according to Jonson.

The incident occurred near the Alamance and Orange county line and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said at Tuesday’s press conference that the investigation was aided by the working relationship between the law enforcement agencies.

“We don’t know where the crime occurs a lot of times when it’s on a bordering county,” Blackwood said. “Whether it was in our county or their county. And so our approach is, ‘We’re going to do it like it happened in our county.’

“And our agencies become one. And that working relationship played out very well in this case.”

Alamance County District Attorney Pat Nadolski said his office is taking these charges seriously.

“I can tell you that the District Attorney’s Office is going to do their job in the prosecution of this matter,” Nadolski said. “We are going to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.”

Nadolski added the maximum sentence in this case could result in a life sentence without parole.

Johnson took Nadolski’s words a step farther.

“When you’ve got a man with six past felony convictions and I don’t know how many misdemeanor convictions that has had sex with an 11-year-old,” Johnson said, “he should never see daylight in my opinion.”

WRAL is reporting that Overman’s bond was raised from $75,000 to $200,000 at Tuesday’s court appearance. The outlet is also reporting Nadolski said at the hearing that Overman had tried to kill himself in jail early Tuesday.

Overman told the judge that he isn’t a monster, according to the Raleigh TV station.

The investigation is ongoing and officials say additional charges are expected.
