CHAPEL HILL – Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour re-sentenced Laurence Lovette Jr., one of two men convicted in the 2008 death of former UNC student body president Eve Carson, to life in prison with out the possibility of parole Monday.
Lovette, now 22, was convicted in 2011 of first-degree murder, kidnapping and armed robbery, and sentenced to life without the possibility for parole—but recent Supreme Court ruling mandating review of automatic sentencing guidelines means that Lovette, who was 17 at the time of the murder, should be re-sentenced.
The re-sentencing hearing, held in Hillsborough, was originally scheduled for April 26 — but was delayed due to a scheduling conflict for Durham psychologist Dr. James Hilkey, who testified for the defense.
Demario Atwater, 25, was also convicted in Carson’s death. He is serving two life terms in prison after pleading guilty to state and federal charges.
