An assisted living facility worker in Chatham County allegedly spent more than $4,000 using a debit card of an elderly resident.

Authorities say a report was filed on behalf of an elderly Chatham County resident in early December after “numerous unauthorized and costly charges” were discovered on a bank statement, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation identified 37-year-old Monica Marie Gunter, of Winston Way in Pittsboro, as the primary suspect. Surveillance footage at multiple retail stores appeared to show Gunter using the victim’s debit card.

Gunter told authorities she had been given permission by a third party to use the card, “but that claim was later invalidated.”

Gunter has been charged with exploitation of elder trust, identity theft, financial card fraud, obtaining property by false pretense and financial card theft. Those are all felony charges, according to law enforcement.

Gunter received a $5,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on January 22.
