**UPDATE: The charges against Deshaunte Lerod Carelock have since been dismissed and expunged from his record.**

What appears to have started as a domestic incident led to a Chapel Hill man being charged with rape.

An arrest report shows that 22-year-old Deshaunte Lerod Carelock was arrested on Friday and charged with varying offenses, including first-degree rape and allegedly pointing a handgun at the victim.

Chapel Hill Police spokesman Ran Northam said that the incident allegedly started just after 5:45 a.m. Friday, December 22, at a residence on Hamilton Road. Northam said the victim attempted to call 911 and was able to connect with emergency officials before the suspect was able to disconnect that call.

The alleged victim was apparently able to reach out via social media to ask others to call 911, according to police, before officers arrived on the scene and took Carelock into custody.

In addition to the single felony count of first-degree rape, Carelock was charged with three misdemeanors – assault by pointing a gun, assault on a female and interfere with emergency communications.

Carelock is being held without bond in the Orange County Jail awaiting a first court appearance on Thursday, December 28.

Multiple local non-profits offer varying services to victims of rape and domestic violence in the Orange County Rape Crisis Center and the Compass Center for Women and Families.
