Chapel Hill police need your help in finding a bicycle thief who stole a $5,000 Orbea Ordu from TrySports at University Mall.

Police say it happened on Saturday, April 26 at approximately 3:30 pm.

“The gentleman walked into TrySports sporting goods store at University Mall,” says Sgt. Brian Walker of the Chapel Hill Police Department. “And he was pushing a bicycle when he walked in the doors. And I believe they might do some bike repair and this kind of thing there, so that in itself wasn’t that unusual.

“And he apparently walked in pushing one bicycle, and walked around for a little bit, took one of the store’s bicycles, pushed it, and walked it out the door.”

Fortunately, a security camera caught some pretty good images of the suspect (see above).

“He was a white male that appeared to be in his mid-thirties,” says Walker. “He had dark brown hair – had some facial hair – and was wearing glasses.”

The bicycle that was stolen is so rare it may be even easier to identify than the suspect.

“The bicycle he pushed out was a fairly unique bicycle,” says Walker. “It was an Orbea Ordu that’s black with red accents, and it’s valued close to five thousand dollars.”

There are eight models of Orbea Ordu Triathlon Bikes, with a price range of $5,000 to nearly $13,000.
