The first person to arrive for work at El Centro Saturday morning found the door broken and called the police. He said nothing appeared to be missing from the business, according to police records.

Responding police found the brick in the back room. The employee said he is unsure of who would have thrown the brick; and the only people he could think of who may want to damage the property would be the people who usually stand at the corner of Jones Ferry Road and Davie Road.

Carrboro residents are looking to crack down on loitering at the corner, after police have responded to multiple calls at the spot. This was a popular spot for day laborers, but El Centro created the Center for Education and Leadership in 2015 so workers could have an alternative place to find work.

El Centro asks that if anyone knows anything about who damaged their door to call any of the numbers listed below to report:

  • El Centro Hispano: 919-945-0132
  • Carrboro Police Department: 919-918-7397
  • Chapel Hill Crime Stoppers: 919-942-7515
