The accused killer of an Anglican priest from Durham allegedly tried to blackmail the victim over meth use before killing him.

TV station WNCN reported Wednesday that, according to warrants obtained from Durham Police, alleged murderer Matthew Reed said he had used meth with 71-year old Kent Hinkson, a former member of the clergy at All Saints Church.

According to warrants, Reed shared that information with his brother-in-law, along with his attempt to blackmail Hinkson by telling his wife that they’d met, unless the victim gave him money.

The plan went wrong, according to warrants. Hinkson told his wife on August 4th that he was going out to run errands, and he never came back.

She reported him missing, and a search ensued. Reed led authorities to Hinkson’s body at Eno State Park in Orange County on Aug. 10.

According to warrants, Reed told his brother-in-law that he killed Hinkson “with his own two hands.”

Reed is charged with first degree murder. He’s being held without bond at Orange County Detention Center.
