Orange County residents may see smoke on Thursday afternoon as a result of a prescribed controlled burn.

Officials say the burn is planned for the woods behind East Chapel Hill High School to “further both safety and educational sustainability initiative.”

Chapel Hill Fire crews will be on site, according to an e-mail from fire officials, to “both monitor and participate in controlling the fire.”

Officials called the prescribed burn “an exceptional training opportunity and very relevant” considering the fire in the woods off of Homestead Road that crews responded to last week.

The North Carolina Forestry Service and the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools Sustainability office are conducting the burn, which is scheduled to begin at one o’clock Thursday afternoon before finishing just before four o’clock.
