CHAPEL HILL – The murder investigation of Faith Danielle Hedgepeth is still unsolved and theChapel Hill Police Department released additional information Tuesday morning in what has been a tightly locked case.
Public information officer Sgt. Josh Mecimore says a timeline of the incident has been laid out for Thursday, September 6 to Friday, September 7.
“She went out at some point with her roommate to a local club, and then was last known to be alive at around 3:00 a.m. at the apartment that they share,” Sgt. Mecimore says.
The investigation also resulted in the discovery of DNA at the apartment where Hedgepeth’s body was found. The DNA is that of a male and Sgt. Mecimore says the police department is still requesting assistance in the capture of the suspect.
“The person responsible for this would be familiar with the victim,” Sgt. Mecimore says. “(He) may have lived nearby at some point in the past. The suspect would be unaccounted for during the early-morning hours of September 7, 2012. The suspect could have made comments regarding the victim to close associates or friends in the past. There may have been a change in the person responsible’s behavior after the murder—things like an unusual interest in the case or a change in performance at work or school.”
Chapel Hill Police worked with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit to gather that information.
While a lot of information is still not being released to the public, Sgt. Mecimore says these details that were given should help in the discovery of the suspect.
“We withheld certain information to protect the integrity of the investigation,” Sgt. Mecimore says. “The information that we released today is information that we don’t believe compromises any part of the investigation.”

Updated Information in Hedgepeth Death Investigation from CHPD
On Friday, September 7, 2012 at approximately 11:00 am, Faith Danielle Hedgepeth was found deceased, by her roommate, in the apartment they shared at 5639 Old Chapel Hill Road (Hawthorne at the View apartment complex). Investigators determined that Hedgepeth’s death was a homicide. The investigation has revealed that Faith and her roommate went to a local Chapel Hill nightclub, The Thrill, in the early morning hours of Friday, September 7, 2012. Faith was last known to be alive around 3:00 am at the apartment she shared with her roommate.
Chapel Hill Police Department investigators have partnered with other local, state and federal agencies in pursuit of the person responsible for Faith’s murder. Evidence collected at the scene and analyzed by the North Carolina State Crime Lab has revealed DNA left at the scene by a male suspect. Investigators are confident this DNA will identify the offender and help us to exclude individuals not involved in this crime.
After consulting with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, we believe identifiers of the offender may include:
• The homicide suspect is familiar with the victim and may have lived near the victim in the past.
• The homicide suspect was unaccounted for during the early morning hours of September 7, 2012.
• The homicide suspect may have made comments regarding the victim to close associates in the past.
• There may have been some change in the homicide suspect’s behavior after the murder (to include an unusual interest in the case) or a change in his performance at work or school.
