Southern Season, the Chapel Hill-based chain of speciality food and gift stores, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to the Triangle Business Journal.

The news comes on the heels of the closure of Southern Season’s store in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.  The closure is the second in two months.  In April, it was announced that the plug would be pulled on a store near Richmond, Virginia.

The Chapel Hill location will remain open.

According to the Triangle Business Journal, smaller stores known as “Taste of Southern Season” will also remain open in Raleigh and Charleston.  Another one of these locations is expected to open in Asheville next week.  The company expects to open more locations of these smaller stores in the coming months.
