School of Rock Chapel Hill, a new music school that “draws on theory and tunes from classic rock bands,” has officially opened after renovating for the former 501 Diner location on Forhdam Boulevard.

The program places students “in pint-sized bands with their peers and perform gigs on stage in front of real live audiences,” according to a release.

Owner David Joseph gravitated toward the idea after starting his own garage band rather than traditional lessons when he was young.

“[School of Rock] provides a setting where kids can learn teamwork and accountability skills… very similar to what team sports provide.”

While the program is now officially open, a grand opening ceremony is scheduled for May 20.
