Playwright/actress Susan Stein brings her one-woman show “Etty” to the stage at Deep Dish Theater in University Mall, this weekend from Thursday, June 5, through Sunday, June 8.

“Etty” is based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum, a Jewish woman in 1940s Amsterdam. She was killed at Auschwitz during World War II, but before she died she left behind a series of writings that ranks among the most powerful literary responses to the horrors of the Holocaust.

“I am not afraid to look suffering straight in the eyes…If I should not survive, how I die will show me who I really am.”

Stein’s play consists entirely of Etty Hillesum’s own words, written between 1941 and 1943. Standing alone on stage with only a suitcase as a set, Stein has worked on “Etty” since 2006, performing it in theaters across Europe and America. (She’s also performed the play in prisons.)

Susan Stein joined Aaron Keck on the WCHL Afternoon News on Tuesday to discuss the play and perform a piece from it.

Visit EttyPlay.org for more information about the play, and DeepDishTheater.org for ticket information. Shows are at 7:30 on Thursday, 8:00 on Friday and Saturday, and 2:00 on Sunday.
