Beginning Thursday, September 10, and running through November 15, University Place (née University Mall) will play host to the sixth annual “Scrapel Hill” art exhibition – featuring 20 works of art by 11 artists, all made from recycled, repurposed, or cast-off materials.

Co-hosted by the mall and the Town of Chapel Hill, “Scrapel Hill” got its start as an Earth Day celebration. It’s no longer held in conjunction with Earth Day, but Chapel Hill public and cultural arts administrator Jeffrey York says it’s still meant to convey a message about the virtue of reusing and recycling. Two of the eleven artists, Charron Andrews and Nuno Gomes, reside in Chapel Hill; all but one (Georgia-based Gordon Chandler) live in North Carolina.

The exhibition opens on September 10, but there will be an artists’ reception on Friday, September 11, from 5:30-8:00 in conjunction with Second Friday ArtWalk. The reception will include an awards ceremony: Chapel Hill News art writer Debbie Meyer will award first- and second-place prizes, as well as a special award for the best movie-themed artwork (sponsored by Silverspot Cinemas, which just so happens to be opening at University Place this fall).

Jeffrey York and Pittsboro-based artist Christie Minchew joined Aaron Keck on WCHL Monday.
