More than a million North Carolinians are expected to hit the roads this Memorial Day weekend (thanks largely to low gas prices, according to AAA Carolinas), but there are quite a few exciting local events to check out if you’re staying close to home.

On Friday, “Audio Under the Stars” returns to Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies for its third season. An increasingly popular summer tradition, “Audio Under the Stars” is an outdoor audio show, with pieces created by radio producers both locally and nationwide (and sometimes globally as well). All the shows are developed around a theme; this Friday’s theme is “Bad Advice and Second Chances.”

Visit AudioUnderTheStars.net for more information and a summer schedule.

“Audio Under the Stars” co-curator (and WCHL alum) Elizabeth Friend helped launch the series three years ago. She shared a preview of Friday’s show with WCHL’s Aaron Keck this week.

Friday’s show runs from 8-10 pm at the Center for Documentary Studies, located at 1317 West Pettigrew Street in Durham. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on.

If you’re more musically inclined, head to Carrboro on Friday evening for the second round of the town’s “Freight Train Blues” series. Co-hosted by the Music Maker Relief Foundation, “Freight Train” is a four-week series of free concerts featuring top blues musicians from around the country. (It runs every Friday through June 10.)

The series began last week with a concert by Cool John Ferguson and Guitar Lightnin’ Lee. Lee stopped by WCHL before the show and spoke with Aaron Keck.

All shows in the “Freight Train” series take place on Friday nights from 6:30-8:30 at Carrboro Town Commons. This week’s show features Wilbur Tharpe and Spencer Branch.
