Gene Galvin is Tuesday’s Hometown Hero.

Gene is the director for UNC Opera.  The opera is comprised of mostly voice majors at UNC, but there are other students who participate.  They typically do a scenes program in the fall and a full opera in the spring.

They will also bring children from the community on the stage in their production of Cindarella.  The UNC Opera has a working relationship with a group called Musical Empowerment.

From the Musical Empowerment website:

“Through free, one-on-one music lessons, Musical Empowerment nurtures meaningful relationships between collegiate mentors and communities of underserved children based on a shared love of music and learning that builds a foundation of confidence, creativity and self-discipline to create successful individuals.”

About 125 students are taught by university students through Musical Empowerment.

You can nominate your own Hometown Hero.  WCHL has honored local members of our community everyday since 2002.
