Every Friday, we highlight three great shows from local performing artists that you can see this coming weekend.

“Notes Of Grace” Benefit Concert
Saturday, March 22nd at 4PM at Kenan Rehearsal Hall (Hill Hall, UNC)

This week’s “Three For The Show” is all about our area’s talented young artists. And not just early-career; we’re talking high school! Take Chapel Hillian Sophie Nachman, who’s organizing a concert Saturday afternoon. It has something for everyone, with local musicians ranging from teens to adults playing music from pop to classical. Ever better: it’s free. Best of all: any donations you leave at the door go directly to the Vasculitis Foundation. So not only do you get to hear a fantastic mix of music, you also get to give to a great cause. And it’s all thanks to the initiative of a young community member.

“Rising Stars” Vocal Showcase
Saturday, March 22nd at 6:30PM at Carrboro Century Center

Every singer has to start somewhere (beyond the supportive acoustics of their bedroom or garage). If you want to hear some of the town’s most promising young singers just as they emerge from their bedroom/garage phase, Carrboro’s “Rising Stars” Vocal Showcase is your ticket. These performers will compete in multiple categories, split by age group and ensemble type. They’ll sing covers of timeless classics, and they’ll sing songs they wrote themselves. It’s a chance to cheer on these up-and-coming vocalists, and might even offer you your first look at some stars. Who knows? Ten years down the line, you might be seeing them down the street at Cat’s Cradle…

Sacrificial Poets: Last Chance Slam
Saturday, March 22nd at 7PM

Sacrificial Poets has been a haven for local young artists for almost a decade now. That means workshops and showcases for kids from middle school through college age, all designed to give them the artistic tools for free expression. It puts them up on stage with nothing but a mic and their words, at a time in life when that feels like the whole world. And it throws in a little healthy competition at the same time, courtesy of the Poetry Slam format.

This Saturday night at the ArtsCenter, Sacrificial Poets holds its last competition before April’s Grand Slam Finals. The search has been on for the twelve finalists who’ll face off for a spot on the youth team. That’s a coveted position, especially since it means a free trip to this summer’s Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Philadelphia. So come down to ooh and ah over the linguistic gymnastics of these young locals – just a few of the many talented young artists in action this weekend.
