Three For The Show: June 6-8

By Akiva Fox Posted June 6, 2014 at 2:19 pm

Every Friday, we highlight three great shows from local performing artists that you can see this coming weekend.

Roots And Leaves Series: Country Blues
Friday, June 6th at 6PM at Southern Village Green

Hillsborough’s Music Maker Relief Foundation is fighting the good fight. This local non-profit loves Southern music in all its forms, and the way they promote those traditions is by supporting the musicians themselves. Many of the music makers are unknown, elderly and poor, but the foundation is much more than just a charity. It helps these incredibly talented musicians with booking performances, recording and promotions, giving them the resources and expertise to spread their joyful noise far and wide. Over the last 20 years, it’s brought new energy to the careers of hundreds of artists, from Orange County and beyond.

Every Friday night in June, MMRF’s Roots and Leaves series will bring some of these musicians to the stage on Southern Village Green. It begins this week with the Country Blues, that old-as-dirt-sounding acoustic style. The featured performers are bluesman Jeffrey Scott and Harvey Dalton Arnold, formerly of late-70s Southern Rock pioneers The Outlaws. It’ll be an evening of great licks under the sky at Southern Village – and don’t forget to come back in the coming weeks for more of our area’s best traditional musicians!

The Monti Season Finale
Saturday, June 7th at 8PM at The ArtsCenter

The Monti has only been around for six years, but it already seems like a fixture in the Triangle. Inspired by New York storytelling series The Moth, founder Jeff Polish created a space for locals to share their personal stories with a welcoming crowd. The tellers range from area celebrities to regular folks, and their stories can be sad, funny, strange, or all of the above.

This Saturday, they wind up their season at the ArtsCenter main stage, with stories built around the theme of “mix-ups.” Hear people like you talking about mistaken identity, misunderstandings, and more. Monti nights are always warm and inviting, but they’re also very popular – get those tickets now!

NC Symphony Plays Beethoven And Copland
Sunday, June 8th at 7:30PM at Southern Village Green

Southern Village has been having a bang-up summer, hosting events from farmers markets to movies. But the highlight might just be its Sunday night concerts, bringing local musicians from every genre to appreciative audiences on the green. This Sunday marks one of their most popular annual traditions: a free outdoor concert from the North Carolina Symphony.

This year, the band is bringing the warhorse to end all warhorses: Beethoven’s fiery Fifth Symphony. The best players in the Triangle, under the direction of conductor William Henry Curry, play this masterpiece and much more (including Aaron Copland’s charming Outdoor Overture). Bring your family, picnic on the lawn, and settle in for a magical night of music.
