North Carolina’s HB2 law has drawn headlines across the country.  Many media outlets refer to it as the “bathroom bill.”  But, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah shined a light on another part of the law.  HB2 bans discrimination on the basis of “race, religion, color, national origin, or biological sex.”  Sexual orientation and gender identity are not protected according to the law.

While the law does not specifically state that businesses can refuse service to people in the LGBTQ community, that can be implied.  HB2 repealed local ordinances that included LGBTQ protections.

In the segment, corespondents Roy Wood Jr. and Jordan Klepper set up a barbecue food truck outside of Trophy Brewing in Raleigh.  When customers attempt to order food, Wood Jr. and Klepper deny service.  The truck is often parked at Trophy Brewing, according to the News & Observer.  But, the truck had a special wrap with the made up name of “Bone Bros. Flamin’ BBQ.”

Wood Jr. explains, “HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level **** and no one can stop me.”

HB2 has been a target of late night comedy shows since its passage.  Stephen Colbert has mocked the law on multiple occasions.  Country singer Brad Paisley performed a satirical song about the law on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

In addition to comedic ridicule, HB2 has cost North Carolina concerts, NCAA and ACC Championship games, conferences, and business expansions.
