Maceo Parker with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic

Friday, 9/27 @ Memorial Hall, UNC

8PM, $10-69.

Two legendary names in funk music make their return to North Carolina at Memorial Hall. Parker’s funk roots began with James Brown, and he has continued to elevate and modernize his sound over the years. George Clinton and P-Funk are well-known for the Atomic Dog and other high-energy hits, and their reputation as party starters should be perfect to kick off the weekend. You’ll have a hard time finding a funkier show anywhere on Friday night.

Bill Callahan with New Bums

Sunday, 9/29 @ Cat’s Cradle

9:30PM, $15-17.

Bill Callahan, known previously as Smog, has a sound refined over 20+ years in the recording and songwriting industry. He has a golden voice and unique musical taste that may sound familiar, seeing that Callahan’s music has been used in many feature films like High Fidelity and Youth in Revolt. Bill’s long-lasting solo career attests to the quality of his live shows, and a live album Rough Travel for a Rare Thing is a good starting point for a taste of his music. Grab a copy of 2009’s Sometimes I Wish I Were an Eagle to get a preview of this Sunday’s show and end your weekend at a classic Carrboro venue.
