Expect to see lots of road construction this summer in Chapel Hill.

Matthew Sullivan, Chapel Hill’s interim fire chief, briefed the town council on the summer road construction projects Monday. Sullivan said in total there will be 9 million dollars worth of improvements.

Sullivan said he thinks it is important that the community is aware of these projects.

“One of the things I believe is if citizens know what’s going on they can plan accordingly,” said Sullivan. “I’m going to be much more frustrated and much more inconvenienced if I don’t know what’s happening but if you tell me what is happening maybe I can plan my rides differently.”

Construction projects include four main areas; Rosemary Street, the Ephesus-Fordham area, street repaving and Google and AT&T’s fiber installation.

One of the largest projects this summer will be the replacement of water pipes on Rosemary, Henderson and Hillsborough Streets.

The OWASA project will start this month and may continue through the spring of 2017.

Council members were concerned about this construction, especially in August when students return for the school year.

Council member Donna Bell suggested limiting the road to only local traffic during that time frame.

“I’m asking about whether closing that for local use only, so that those residential folks can get to their homes in and out but cutting down on basically the traffic that goes down East Rosemary Street up to Boundary [Street] to get back on to Franklin Street,” said Bell.

Construction of the new AC Marriott Hotel on Rosemary Street is slated to begin soon. It will involve crews digging to build underground parking as well as trucks bringing in pieces of the new hotel.

The sidewalks along Rosemary Street between Henderson Street and Merritt Mill Road will get a face lift this summer. A $1.8 million bond from the town will go towards widening the sidewalks, installing a brick amenity strip and replace curb and gutter sections.

Construction on the redevelopment of Ephesus-Fordham Area will continue, such as improvements to the Ephesus Church Road intersection near the Eastgate shopping center and improving the entrance to Ram’s Plaza. Crews will also extend the service road near the McDonald’s to provide access to Ram’s Plaza.

Street resurfacing and reconstruction will occur in phases starting this summer and extending through next year. Some notable areas include; Ridge Road on UNC’s campus (to install bike lanes and high visibility crosswalks) Friday Center Drive, South Road and South Columbia Street.

Sullivan said construction will continue around town on Google and AT&T’s fiber optic cable systems.

Google will install Fiber infrastructure under Rosemary Street during the summer. Sullivan said they are working with AT&T to make sure their construction doesn’t cause any issues for residents.

“AT&T continues to do its fiber installs throughout town and we’re doing our best to keep up with them and chase them down and deal with some of the problems we’ve had in the community,” said Sullivan.

Fiber installation has caused cuts to power lines and water mains around town.

Sullivan also said to expect occasional delays near the Carolina Square site, as construction continues on the multiuse facility.
