Rev. Thomas Nixon is this week’s Hometown Hero.
He has been the pastor of St. Paul AME Church for 12 years. Recently, the members of St. Paul celebrated Rev. Nixon’s 35 years in the ministry and 30 years as a pastor.
His many awards and honors include Community Outreach Lamp Lighter Award from Radio One – The Light Radio Station; the Dove Award for Excellence in Religious Affairs from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro l Alumni Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and was a semi-finalist for the 2015 Man of the Year Community Service Award sponsored by the Spectacular Magazine.
But, Rev. Nixon prefers to focus on the work of his congregation. The church has been serving this community for over 150 years. The church’s women’s ministry works with Table in Carrboro to provide meals for school children when they go home at night, for the weekends, and summer.
St. Paul AME Church is working on a major project called St. Paul Village.
St. Paul Village will be located at the corner of Rogers Road and Purefoy Drive in the historic Rogers Road and Eubanks Road neighborhood. The site will include a new worship sanctuary and fellowship hall; mixed-use senior and affordable housing; childcare, youth, and senior centers; recreational facilities; a wellness center; a health clinic; an historical museum; and a memorial garden. Phase 1 construction will start soon.
You can nominate your own Hometown Hero. WCHL has honored local members of our community since 2002.
