Early voting totals in Orange County have officially passed the total early voting turnout from the 2012 presidential election with two days of early voting remaining.

The final 2012 early voting total was 50,234. As of the closing of polls Thursday, 50,861 votes had been cast in Orange County this cycle.

Early voting got started on a torrid pace on October 20 with 5,390 voters casting ballots in Orange County; that total was higher than any one-day total in the 2012 election cycle.

While the 2016 early voting numbers have already surpassed the entire 2012 early vote total, it is likely the final two days of early voting will continue to add votes at a high rate. More than 20 percent of the early votes cast in Orange County in 2012 were cast on the final two days of early voting; the final Friday and Saturday in 2012 early voting were the only days where more than 5,000 votes were cast in a single day in Orange County.

Carrboro Town Hall continues to set the pace for early voting sites in Orange County with 13,104 voters through Thursday.

Turnout on Thursday was dominated by Chapel of the Cross, which is located adjacent to the UNC campus. The high turnout near the university came one day after President Barack Obama visited Chapel Hill to encourage voter turnout at a campaign stop for Hillary Clinton.

Early voting runs until 7:30 on Friday night before the polls will be open on Saturday for the final day of early voting from eight o’clock in the morning until one o’clock in the afternoon. Individuals in line at an early voting site by one o’clock Saturday will be allowed to vote and same-day registration is allowed at all voting sites during early voting.

Election Day is November 8.
