The new construction will involve one 11-story and two five-story buildings with about 246 apartment units, 159,000 square feet of office space and 42,000 square feet of retail space.

“Franklin Street has always been the place where Carolina, the university, meets the world,” UNC Chancellor Carol Folt said at the groundbreaking ceremony in October. “It’s a place where we welcome it in.”

At that same ceremony, then-Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt said that he was proud of the partnership that brought about the new Carolina Square.

“140 West and Carolina Square weren’t conceived of in some back room in South Building or some basement space in Town Hall,” said Kleinschmidt. “They were conceived of here on the streets with the community involved saying what they wanted in new spaces. So that we could do as we have always done, embrace the time in which we live and move forward boldly together.”

West Franklin Street, near the Church Street intersection, will be reduced from four lanes to two through Friday, January 8 from nine o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the afternoon for work on a water line.

Beginning next week, the sidewalk on the south side of West Franklin Street near the construction will be closed. Detour signs will direct people across Franklin Street where travel will not be impacted.
