The District Attorney’s Office has dismissed charges against 22-year-old Shaquille Oneill Davis in connection with the Christmas Day Shooting of one-year-old Maleah Williams in Chapel Hill.

Williams was shot while her mother was holding her outside of their Trinity Court apartment, according to police. Authorities say many parents were watching their children play on the unusually warm Christmas Day last year.

Police said the shots were fired from a vehicle leaving the apartment complex.

Davis was taken into custody the next day and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and attempted first-degree murder.

Assistant District Attorney Lamar Proctor said that the charges against Davis were dismissed while the investigation continues. Davis is currently being held on a 90-day sentence on unrelated charges, according to Proctor.

Two other suspects, Ramone Jamarr Alston and Pierre Je Bron Moore, are facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the shooting. They were arrested on December 28, shortly after the infant died.

District Attorney Jim Woodall told reporters after a December 29 hearing that charges against Davis could be upgraded or downgraded.

Alston and Moore are being held without bond and are scheduled to appear in court on March 8.
