Chapel Hill Police are investigating a series of car break-ins from early Friday morning.

A string of six reported break-ins resulted in nearly $8,000 worth of items being stolen, according to multiple police reports.

The break-ins were concentrated at two locations – the Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and in the parking lot of the Elliot Road shopping center that houses 02 Fitness. The two incidents outside of the YMCA appear to have occurred around six o’clock Friday morning, according to the reports, while the Elliot Road break-ins were reported during the seven o’clock hour.

Chapel Hill Police Lieutenant Josh Mecimore said it was “likely” that the break-ins were related due to the similar circumstances – each report says the suspect broke the vehicle’s window to gain entry – but added police were investigating before making any final determinations.

Mecimore said there was no evidence to suggest these break-ins are related to a spike in vehicle break-ins from earlier in the month. In nearly all of those instances the vehicles had been left unlocked.

Police are continuing to encourage residents to lock vehicles and remove valuables, if possible, when leaving the vehicle unattended.

If you see anything suspicious, you are asked to contact police by calling 911.
