(February 2021) Update: Charges against Samuel Norman in this case have since been expunged.

Two UNC students, who are reportedly former roommates, have been arrested after a fight between the two resulted in one being stabbed with a screwdriver and facing strangulation charges.

Chapel Hill Police Lieutenant Josh Mecimore said officers were called to a disturbance on South Heritage Loop early Friday morning where authorities found the two subjects fighting.

“And it looks like one had a strangulation injury – an injury to his neck,” Mecimore said. “And that the other had minor stab injuries from a screwdriver.”

Mecimore added that it appeared the two suspects had crossed paths earlier in the night and gone back to their former apartment complex, where the fight took place.

Authorities say there is no known motivation for the fight at this time.

Samuel Peter Norman and Tarik Raouf Abdou, both 22, were charged in connection with the fight.

Norman is facing a felony charge of assault by strangulation. Abdou has been charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing Norman with a screwdriver, according to police.

Both suspects were initially held on $2,500 secured bonds and were scheduled for court appearances in Hillsborough Friday afternoon.
