State law enforcement has announced that a Chapel Hill man died in a single-vehicle accident on Sunday.

The State Highway Patrol announced in a release that troopers responded to a call just before 1:45 Sunday morning after a vehicle struck a tree.

Authorities say the preliminary investigation shows a 1996 Honda vehicle was traveling west on Dogwood Acres Drive when the vehicle ran onto the right shoulder and struck a tree.

The front passenger of the vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Ronald Louis Herbst Jr., of Chapel Hill, died as a result of the accident.

The driver, 37-year-old David Dees Hill II, of Hillsborough, was transported to UNC Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, according to law enforcement.

Hill has been charged with driving while impaired, according to a release.

Authorities say additional charges are anticipated in the case.
