***UPDATE: Two suspects, 17-year-old Shane Ryan Long and 16-year-old Caleb James Etheridge, were arrested by Chapel Hill Police. Their first court appearance is set for Tuesday.***

A message was sent to the Chapel Hill High School community on Monday afternoon after a threat was made against the school.

Chapel Hill High Principal Sulura Jackson sent a message to parents after four o’clock Monday afternoon saying that the Chapel Hill – Carrboro School System central office had discovered a message on a social media site that included “a picture of ammunition and generic threat to bring harm to a school.”

Jackson said in the message that the incident was immediately reported to Chapel Hill Police.

Jackson added that police and the School Resource Officer traced the message to two students at the school.

Jackson said that “at no time were our students found to be in any danger, however the police presence may have been alarming to some.”

Jackson added that an investigation is being conducted.

“Good afternoon. This is Chapel Hill High Principal Sulura Jackson. Earlier today, our central office staff discovered a message on a social media site that included a picture of ammunition and generic threat to bring harm to a school. This incident was immediately reported to the Chapel Hill Police Department. With the help of our School Resource Officer, they quickly traced the message to two students at our school. The police are meeting with the students and their parents or guardians. An investigation is being conducted. At no time were our students found to be in any danger, however the police presence may have been alarming to some. I want to reiterate that we will always take safety issues seriously as we put the well-being of our students above everything else. Please remind your students to always contact our administration or the local authorities in the case of threatening social media messages. Thank you for listening.”
