“This is Ellie Kinnaird. I always enjoy Alan Culton’s commentary. Most WCHL commentaries are just preaching to the choir. For the most part our community shares the same goals, values, gripes and aside from arguments about development we sing off the same page, but not Alan. He is not afraid to take on the liberals in our area fearlessly. A more timid person might be afraid to raise his head and lift his voice in this hotbed of progressive conformity.
I hear his commentary and think ‘I’ll record one opposing what I just consider his outrageous take on things I hold dear.’ Most of the time I just go on, but today I take him on. Alan complained about greeting each other at Christmas with ‘happy holidays’ instead of ‘merry Christmas.’ He misses the point. The greeting ‘happy holidays’ has nothing to do with recognizing the pagan practices that early Christianity adopted, such as Christmas trees and wreaths, but the welcoming embrace of our country’s history to all peoples and their religious beliefs and practices.
Alan wandered into people dancing in circles in Stonehenge ceremonies, drunken bacchanals and even blood sacrifice, but maybe his Jewish friends might remind him of the quiet, eight day ceremony of Hanukah as one of our religious holidays for which we greet each other, or the Muslims who share our love of Jesus and his mother Mary, where they appear in the Quran with great reverence. In fact, the same day I heard Alan’s commentary, I heard a report that Muslims in Pakistanand Senegal greet each other with ‘merry Christmas.’ They also have holidays around this time of the year. The Hindu, they just opened a temple in Morrisville.
Are all of these to be characterized as degenerate and only Christian holiday is holy? They’re all entitled to be holy and greeted with respect. Of course Christmas holds a great meaning, that Alan spoke of, a complex story that brings comfort and joy to all, along with all of the religions that celebrate their holy day during this season.
So happy holidays to all people that celebrate whatever is meaningful to them, and keep writing Alan, I love your commentaries. This is Ellie Kinnaird.”
