We live in a very generous community that contributes to many organizations that help a lot of people.  While we have a lot cheerful givers, the overall level of giving is down.  The state of the economy probably has a lot to do with it.

But, there may be other reasons why some people might not be donating to a specific organization.  I had a conversation recently with a friend who asked me about a particular organization.  After I told him what I knew, he said that he looked them up on the internet and he wasn’t going to give to them because a too high percentage of his donation was going to overhead.

Yes.  That’s a legitimate concern.

But, we also must remember that administrative fundraising and program costs are necessary for nonprofits to achieve their goals.  These organizations must invest in competent staffs, meet program costs, and spend money to raise money.

If we want these organizations to have the maximum input and impact, we must ensure that they have the resources they need as well as the quality leadership demanded.

So, I just ask you not to judge them based on a percentage figure in a report, dig a little deeper and ask a lot of questions.  Learn how they will use your gift.

After all, these organizations are working to solve big problems.  Shouldn’t we want to them spend funds on a quality staff and operate professionally, efficiently, and effectively?

So, yes.  Check the organizations out.  But, please do a proper evaluation of the meaning of their overhead expenses.
