On Saturday mornings, my children watch the most ridiculous television shows I’ve ever seen. Silly wizards and over-the-top ninjas save the earth from ridiculously stupid villains. Though I try very hard not to be a judgmental person, I have been known to say things like “Your brain is crying right now because you are making it suffer through this show.”

What happened to all the quality television like Scooby Doo? Back in the 70’s I got to watch profound mysteries solved by rockin’ role models like Thelma and Daphne who used both brains and charm to tackle some of life’s most perplexing quandaries such as “who left the muddy footprints in Old Man Watson’s cave?” Scooby and Shaggy taught me the power of using food as a motivational tool. There was no obstacle they could not overcome nor courage they could not muster up in order to get a Scooby Snack.

Besides the fact that my Saturday heroes had no super powers apart from their brilliant minds, there is another profound difference between my children’s shows and Scooby Doo.  In Scooby Doo, the gang went looking for adventure. In the shows my children watch, the adventure drops out of the sky or is thrust upon them. I think that is what bugs me the most.

I, too, have a habit of waiting for things to move into alignment so I can ‘do my thing.’ I used to think this type of patience was quite virtuous and rationalized it meant God had other priorities for my time. He certainly would not have heaped the responsibilities of daily living on me if He wanted me to live my dreams. When the house is dirty and the laundry pile is the size of Mt. St. Helens, who can think of anything else, right? Plus, everyone knows that good things happen to those who wait.

I’ve now decided that this whole ‘waiting’ thing is a crock of poo. It was most likely conceived of by a parent who lived through some hard times and had to make up something to quiet their kids from asking for stuff all the time. “Mom, can I have a pony?” “No honey. Remember, good things come to those who wait.”  The more truthful answer is good things happen to those who go for it, and go for it with gusto. Forget being virtuous. Be a dream chaser. They have much more interesting lives just look at Fred and the gang. Their Mystery Machine has been all over the place and the stories they can tell…

If you have a dream you’ve been putting off until the kids get older, or you have more money, or the house is clean, or whatever else – kick the excuses aside and move that dream front and center. Write down your dream so you don’t forget it. The other advantage to writing down your dream is that it makes it more real. Take a few small steps this very instant to bring that dream to fruition. It is as easy as 1-2-3-4:

Step 1: Write down your goal/dream.
Step 2: Take a few small steps every day.
Step 3: Treat yourself to a Scooby Snack or some other desirable reward.
Step 4: Set your phone alarm so you make chasing your dreams a daily habit.

Pretty soon, you will be living your dreams. Go get started RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!
