As 2012 comes to a close, we are all thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions for 2013! This year, I resolve to eat (healthier) dessert! Contrary to what many people believe, dessert does not have to be totally off limits for those of us who want a slim waistline in the New Year. Using healthier ingredients, you can still enjoy the occasional treat. Who knew that greek yogurt could be transformed into a decadent chocolate dessert? Or that sliced apples popped in the microwave can be a close second to apple pie? Check out Whole Foods on South Elliot Road for a great variety of organic ingredients to include in these easy to assemble dessert options. Okay, now read on to learn how to eat dessert without a downer in your diet!

Honey Apples with Cinnamon

  • 1 large apple
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • drizzle of honey
  • Optional: 1 tbsp. lite whipped topping

Slice apple into quarters and spread out evenly on a microwave safe plate. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Microwave at 30 second intervals until apples can be easily cut with a fork. Drizzle with honey and enjoy!

*For something extra, top with whipped topping. The “lite” variety won’t be too hard on your calorie count.

Greek “Chocolate Mousse”

  • 1 container vanilla greek yogurt — I use Yoplait 100 calorie Vanilla Greek Yogurt, but Whole Foods or and other organic alternative is just fine.)
  • 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp. lite whipped topping
  • Optional:sliced bananas or strawberries

Simply stir the cocoa powder right into your yogurt container and top with whipped topping. Leave whipped topping on top, or mix it in. It seriously tastes just like chocolate mousse. Every now and then I’ll slice a few strawberries or bananas on top of this dessert. It’s a great addition!

Now you can really look forward to 2013—the year you will eat dessert and look your best! Enjoy these healthy dessert options!
