THRICE Bucket Challenge!

By Aaron Keck Posted August 26, 2014 at 2:14 pm

On Friday morning, Ron Stutts took the Ice Bucket Challenge live on the air – and challenged me to follow suit.

(Go here to watch Ron’s video.)

Oh, sure, I could have ignored it. But then this weekend my friend Sylvia Steere challenged me as well – and Sylvia has a black belt. You don’t ignore folks with black belts. They kick.

So, okay. Challenge accepted!

But if I was going to do it, I wasn’t going to do it like some amateur. Oh no. Most folks have done it once and called it a day – but not me. No, I resolved to take the Ice Bucket Challenge not once, not twice, but three times – all live on the air, on Monday during the afternoon news. (Or “Aaron in the Afternoon,” rather. I’m going to have to get used to calling it that.)

Why three times, incidentally? Because we had three special guests in the studio on Monday – and I wanted all three of them to do the honors. (To cut down on water wastage, I eschewed the bucket in favor of a Dickey’s cup.)

Behold the evidence!

First, live audio with special guest pourer Tana Hartman-Thorn, of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Next, Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens.

Finally, Common Science writer Jeff Danner.

Tom Stevens – ever the multitasker – was also gracious enough to snap these action shots of the challenge in process:

Aaron Keck Ice Bucket 2

(My shirt is already wet from Tana Hartman-Thorn’s earlier effort.)

Aaron Keck Ice Bucket 3

Aaron Keck Ice Bucket 4

Aaron Keck Ice Bucket 5

(And believe it or not, my shirt got even wetter after Jeff Danner took his turn.)

Afterwards, Ron Stutts and I discussed the Ice Bucket Challenge live on the air:

It’s all for a good cause, of course – to raise money for ALS research, in the hope of a cure. Is it silly? Absolutely – but hey, it’s raised about $90 million so far, so whatever works.

If you haven’t donated yet, do so! Visit ALSA.org to add your two cents (preferably more!) to the cause.
