Most everybody feels a crisis about their own mortality at some point or another; some people react by buying the sleek sports car they always dreamed they’d be able to afford as an adult, some people leave their spouses for another romantic partner, and some people completely strip their lives down and re-evaluate everything from square one. Our guest this week, August Turak, dealt with the anxiety of his own mortality by briefly joining a Trappist Monastery. How far are parents willing to go to get their children to score well on the SAT? Debbie Steir, my guest for today, probably pushed the upper extreme. For three years, she tried everything from different test-prep materials to experimenting with different test-taking strategies on herself, and was eventually so successful she wrote a book about it, The Perfect Score Project: Uncovering the Secrets of the SAT. Tune in to hear how she increased her own score by over 300 points and the techniques she used (and still uses) to help increase her son’s score by over 500.

While the old illusion of acting as an easy and instantly glamorous profession is nearly gone, Megan Ketch will tell you that success on stage and film can be much harder than even the most pessimistic imagination will allow. A recent graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and NYU’s Masters in Acting program, Megan has scored roles in big productions such as CBS’s crime drama Blue Bloods and more recently, the film The Big Wedding. It wasn’t always like that for her though, and this week we get to pick her brain about the challenges she’s faced and the lessons she’s learned about being an aspiring actress in the big city.
