Here is a full list of the scheduled meetings for elected officials across Orange and Chatham Counties for this month, before the local governments get going for the fall.
This weekend community leaders held a march for affordable housing. The “House Us Now” march originated with the Community Empowerment Fund in partnership with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP, the Marian Cheek Jackson Center, EmPOWERment Inc, and the Interfaith Council. It called for affordable housing for community members who make 30 percent or below the area median income.
A new office building in the Glen Lennox community opened last week. It carries the namesake and legacy of the first Black woman to attend UNC, Gwendolyn Harrison Smith.
Orange County has been working for several years to expand their government campuses. The first building on the new Orange County Northern Campus is also the first building in the county to be named after a Black woman.
Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) recently joined NBCUniversal Local’s 2021 Clear The Shelters – a nationwide pet adoption campaign. During the campaign, all adoption fees for all adoptable pets at OCAS will be waived.
The Chapel Hill Police Department is working with the Campus and Community Coalition to identify bars and restaurants which serve intoxicated individuals contributing to the potential public safety threat of impaired driving.
