The Shared Learning Association of Chapel Hill presents Dr. Stuart Solomon who will give the April Gray Lindgren lecture ahead of the organization’s end-of-year potluck and annual meeting.
Dr. Solomon will discuss naming practices in Europe and North America, concentrating on the origins, history, etymology, and demographics of personal names.
He will address questions like how “John” and “Mary” became the most popular names in the English-speaking world, how have they fared recently, and “what are the ‘God particles’ in Biblical names”?
Dr. Solomon has a doctorate in linguistics from UNC-Chapel Hill, concentrating in Indo-European historical linguistics, followed by a 26-year career at the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC.
His lecture is free and open to the public.
