The League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties will sponsor a program on public education in North Carolina. The program will be held Tuesday, February 25, 2014, from 7 to 8:30pm at Extraordinary Ventures, 200 S. Elliot Road, Chapel Hill. The program is open to the public. Admission and parking are free.
Dr. Helen F. Ladd, the Edgar T. Thompson Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Economics at Duke’s Terry Sanford Institute, will discuss the implications of new North Carolina regulations on charter schools and the possible effects of legislative funding decisions for all schools.
Dr. Ladd began her career in economics, but her research evolved to focus on educational policy plus state and local public finance. Her interests include school accountability, teacher labor markets, and school choice. In recent years she has traveled worldwide to study educational progress in other countries and has authored numerous books and articles on her findings. Her editorials appear regularly in local newspapers, with cautions against turning education into a primarily private affair or creating a dual (public vs private) school system. She also values experienced and effective teachers and urges the public to decrease turnover by rewarding and encouraging them.
